Mendoza Beyond the Vineyards

SEPTEMBER 2026·5 MIN READ

Most Mendoza itineraries follow the same shape: land, spend a few days tasting through Luján de Cuyo and the Valle de Uco, maybe a day trip to a high-altitude bodega, then move on. It's a good few days — this is deservedly one of the world's great Malbec regions. It's also, for most visitors, the entire trip.

Three hours south by road is San Rafael, which is not a different Mendoza so much as an older, quieter part of the same one. It's one of the province's original wine sub-regions — our own itinerary includes tastings here, alongside an optional stop in Luján de Cuyo on arrival — but it never built the tourist infrastructure that turned Valle de Uco into a destination in its own right. What it has instead is the Cañón del Atuel, the Río Atuel itself, and a few hundred thousand hectares of foothills that Mendoza's wine-country visitors mostly never see.

Not a trade-off, an extension

The way we'd put it: you're not choosing between wine and adventure on a trip to Mendoza. You're choosing which glass of Malbec you drink at the end of the day — at a tasting room in the Valle de Uco, or riverside next to an asado, a few hours after a canyon and a rapid. Both are the same province's wine, from a few hours apart.

San Rafael isn't a detour from wine country. It's the part of wine country most people's itineraries never reach.

That's really the case for building San Rafael into a Mendoza trip rather than treating it as a separate one: it's close enough to add without restructuring a wine-focused itinerary, and different enough — rivers, canyon walls, a night sky without a city's light pollution — that it doesn't feel like more of the same few days.
